• Government is overzealous with secrecy, Reichert says by Charles Pope, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, July 26. T"he United States is threatened by its fetish for secrecy, an expanding and often arbitrary impulse that adds 40,000 new documents each day to the federal government's mountain of 'classified' papers. That conclusion comes from Rep. Dave Reichert, a Republican from Bellevue and a former King County sheriff who is working on legislation that would refine the government's process for deciding which documents remain secret."

• Durbin Moves to Withhold Funding From Office of the Vice President Pending Compliance With Executive Order, news release, July 10. "U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, today included language in the his subcommittee’s appropriation bill to suspend funds for the Office of the Vice President in FY2008 until the Office of the Vice President complies with Executive Order 12958."
• Ex-convicts and addicts may get DoD clearance by Elana Schor and Roxana Tiron, The Hill, July 10. "At the Pentagon’s request, Senate defense authorizers tucked deep within a defense bill a repeal of the department’s restriction on granting security clearances to ex-convicts, drug addicts and the mentally incompetent."
• DoD Rule on Historical Research in the Files of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Federal Register, July 6. "This part identifies and updates the policies and procedures for the programs that permit U.S. citizens to perform historical research in records created by or in the custody of the OSD."
• Report: Congress needs to take charge of DOD procurement policy by Matthew Weigelt, Federal Computer Week, July 5. "Congress needs to take a stand before the Defense Department sets a new procurement precedent and moves away from a decades-old policy of paying for a project with one fiscal year’s appropriations, according to the CRS report released June 15 by the Federation of American Scientists."
