• Director of the Information Security Oversight Office Retires, NARA news release, September 28. "Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein announced today that he has reluctantly accepted the resignation of J. William Leonard, Director of the Information Security Oversight Office (ISOO)." (Mr. Leonard's letter of resignation)
• 'Classified' Iraq Corruption Report Posted Online by Justin Rood, ABC News The Blotter, September 27. "Iraqi officials' malfeasance undermines the legitimacy of the Iraqi government and hamstrings its anti-corruption efforts, according to the version of the State Department report posted by the Federation of American Scientists, the group which made the document public."
• State Dept Press Briefing: Excerpt on Classified Anticorruption Report, September 29. "This report was -- or these documents were apparently classified after they appeared on the web elsewhere. Do you know why that decision was taken to classify them?"
• Analysis: New defense intelligence policy by Shaun Waterman, United Press International, September 28. "A new Pentagon policy directive for U.S. military intelligence mandates information-sharing with U.S. domestic agencies and foreign partners and recognizes the leading role of the new director of national intelligence."

"A fight over White House secrecy has taken a new twist, with Senate officials confirming Wednesday that a Republican senator is secretly blocking a bill that would reverse President Bush's 2001 executive order allowing ex-presidents to seal their records indefinitely."

"Rosen and Weissman were the first private citizens to be prosecuted for oral transmission of 'national defense information,' arousing concern among press-freedom advocates and watchdog groups over new legal restrictions on news gathering and sharing of information with government contacts."
• Identification and Protection of Unclassified Controlled Nuclear Information, Federal Register, September 14. "The Department of Energy (DOE) proposes to amend regulations that prohibit the unauthorized dissemination of certain unclassified but sensitive information identified as Unclassified Controlled Nuclear Information (UCNI)... to clarify the types of information that may be identified as UCNI."
• Government earns low marks for openness by Florence Olsen, Federal Computer Week, September 7. "A recent sharp increase in government secrecy is evident in the percentage of federal contracting dollars awarded without competition and in the executive branch’s use of the state secrets privilege, according to the latest secrecy report card from OpenTheGovernment.org, a coalition of open-government advocacy organizations."
• Terrorism Watch List is Faulted for Errors by Ellen Nakashima, Washington Post, September 7. "The government's master watch list of known or suspected terrorists continues to be marred by errors and inconsistencies that can obstruct the capture of terrorists or cause innocent people to be detained by U.S. authorities, the Justice Department's inspector general said yesterday."
