A badge holder safety notice (pdf) was released at Kennedy Space Center on August 15, 2008. The current issue with the badge holder is the possibility of the badge holder becoming a Foreign Object Damage (FOD) hazard to flight hardware, or a projectile hazard under certain circumstances. The Office of Protective Services has suspended issuing the badge holder from Identity Stronghold until such time as additional evaluations are conducted and all issues surrounding the FOD and hazard issues with the badge holder have been resolved. As a minimum precaution, personnel should ensure the badge holder is not worn, or is properly secured, in the vicinity of sensitive flight hardware, such as electronics, where FOD may be an issue. OPS will continue to make available the original clear plastic badge holder. The NASA Office of Security and Program and Protection is working with key personnel in addressing security compliance requirements, operational needs, training, deficiencies, and safety issues in order to mitigate all concerns. Please carefully review the Safety Notice for Stronghold Secure Badgeholder notice at http://protective-services.jpl.nasa.gov/badging.html, and if you have further questions regarding the badge holders, contact: Charles Wainwright, Office of Protective Services x4-2150 or James Lumsden, Systems Safety Program Office x4-5667 Randy J.
