- Defense Department: The War On Terror Has Cost $250 Million A Day For 16 Years by Jay Cassano, International Business Times, October 31. "The Department of Defense periodically releases a 'cost of war' report. The newly released version, obtained by the Federation of American Scientists Secrecy News blog, covers the time from the September 11th terrorist attacks through mid-2017."
- National Archives Releases JFK Assassination Records, National Archives news release, October 26. "The National Archives today released 2,891 records related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. These records are available for download online. Additional records will be released subject to redactions recommended by the executive offices and agencies. NARA will process these records for release as soon as possible on a rolling basis."
- The Indonesia Massacre's Historic Message by Jonathan Marshall, Consortium News, October 19. "The National Archives declassified nearly 30,000 pages of documents from the U.S. embassy in Jakarta from 1964 to 1968."

- FAS petitions DOE for declassification of the size of the US nuclear stockpile, FY 2017, October 3. "The reasons for the proposed declassification are the same as the reasons for the Department's previous declassification of stockpile information: Nuclear transparency can strengthen non-proliferation efforts, and can lay a foundation for future arms control efforts."
