Dear colleagues:NARA Chief Operating Officer Jay Bosanko has asked me to send you the following message from him:
I am writing to share some interesting and exciting news. The National Archives recently released our new Strategic Plan as well as our FY 2019 budget request. In a Town Hall with staff about these subjects last week we announced a change that is likely of interest to you and your organizations.
Meg PhillipsWe have announced our intent to consolidate all of the classified records in the Presidential Library system in the Washington, DC area. This follows our previous consolidations of all other classified records that were previously maintained in the field. It also fulfills a recommendation made by the Public Interest Declassification Board (PIDB).
It is important to stress that this change in physical location of the records is temporary and that the records will be returned to the Presidential Libraries as they are declassified.
We are making this change to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the safeguarding and the declassification of this material and in light of resource challenges. Researchers are expected to benefit from efficiencies we can gain in the declassification process.
We are just starting the planning process and many details must still be worked out. We we will share additional information with you as our plans develop and in our upcoming meetings.
In the meantime, if you have ideas that you think might be useful in our planning, or any questions or concerns about this change, please let me know. I can be reached at william.bosanko@nara.gov.
Best,
Jay
