The following news story appeared on 13 January 1999 in the Seoul newspaper Choson Ilbo :
ROK Ministry Releases Documents Regarding Pueblo Incident
Thirty-one years after the fact, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has made public the diplomatic documents concerning two major events in 1968, including the Pueblo incident on Jan. 23 [1968] and the 31-man commando infiltration into Seoul which occurred on Jan. 21. The documents reveal the conflict which arose between Korea and the United States over the treatment of the Pueblo case, when the US intelligence ship was seized by North Korean naval ships off Wonsan.
The documents demonstrate that while Korea wanted an aggressive, all-out response to North Korea's seizure of the Pueblo, the US advocated a more peaceable approach for the safety of the vessel's crew members. Because of this conflict, the two nations exchanged numerous letters. Korea, in particular, demanded future military assistance from the US to assuage their anger over what they saw as a soft approach from the Americans over the incident.
The revelations surfacing in these documents are possible because of a government regulation that all diplomatic documents must be unsealed and made public after thirty years.
