Question Taken at the June 6, 2001 State Department Daily Press Briefing

Peru: U.S. Assistance in Montesinos Apprehension, Investigation (Taken Question)

Question: Has the U.S. government begun to provide any information to the Government of Peru on Montesinos’ activities?

Answer: The United States is cooperating fully with requests from the Government of Peru in its efforts to locate and arrest Mr. Montesinos and to investigate his alleged criminal activities.

The arrest in Miami and subsequent extradition to Peru earlier this year of Victor Venero, an alleged accomplice of Mr. Montesinos, is clear evidence of our commitment to cooperation.

The Government of Peru has requested certain documents be released under the Freedom of Information Act. This is a lengthy process but we are moving forward with all due diligence to respond.
